Transition from Polybrominated to Organophosphate Flame Retardants:
In the mid-2000s, polybrominated diphenyl ether flame retardants were phased out due to toxicity concerns. OPEs, due to their chemical structure, slowly degrade, becoming part of indoor dust. Individuals are exposed through skin contact, ingestion, or inhalation.
Research Scope and Participants:
The study, conducted by multiple institutions across the U.S., analyzed 6,646 mother-child pairs from 16 cohorts in the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcome (ECHO) study. Participants were diverse in background and region, with urine samples collected between 2007 and 2020 during the second and third trimesters.
OPEs and Birth Outcomes:
Researchers measured nine OPE biomarkers and found three (dibutyl phosphate, di-isobutyl phosphate, bis(butoxyethyl) phosphate) associated with increased risks of preterm birth, particularly among female newborns. Additionally, three other OPEs (bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate, bis(2-methylphenyl) phosphate, and dipropyl phosphate) were linked to greater birth weight-for-gestational-age.
Impact of Preterm Birth and High Birth Weight:
Preterm births pose risks for infants, including breathing and feeding problems, developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and sensory impairments. Meanwhile, higher birth weight is associated with childhood obesity, increasing the risk of conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
OPEs as Endocrine Disruptors:
The study highlights that OPEs may affect thyroid hormone levels, cause inflammation, and induce oxidative stress, contributing to preterm births. As endocrine disruptors, they may influence placental development, with potential variations based on fetal sex.
Call for Policy Changes:
Given the prevalence of OPEs in various products, the study emphasizes that consumer choices alone cannot mitigate exposure. Instead, the researchers advocate for policy changes and regulations to address and reduce organophosphate ester flame retardant exposure during pregnancy.
